Former Gov. Louie B. Nunn Dead at 79

(Versailles) - Former Kentucky Gov. Louie B. Nunn, Barren County native and the state's last Republican governor until Ernie Fletcher died at his home last night from an apparent heart attack.

Woodford County Coroner Steve Ward says Nunn collapsed after what family members say was "a fairly quiet, sedate day" of entertaining friends at his home.

Ward says Nunn had seen a doctor in the last few weeks, but was probably for routine visits, and although Nunn had heart problems, Ward says they were probably not severe.

Nunn was elected governor in 1967. Nunn's four-year gubernatorial administration saw Kentucky take strides in its care of the retarded, the mentally ill and juvenile delinquents. Nunn later called the revamping of the state's mental-health treatment system his proudest accomplishment.

The state's university system also was expanded during his term and discrimination in housing was outlawed.

Funeral arrangements are forthcoming.
