Wolf Creek Dam Funding

Officials say a project to repair a leaking dam on Lake Cumberland could be completed two years sooner if federal funding is expedited.

Engineer Mike Zoccola says the work at Wolf Creek Dam could be done in 2012, or sooner. Strong support from members of Congress could speed the funding for the 309 million-dollar project.

The dam repairs have been projected to take seven years. Repairs include pouring a long underground wall along the dam's earth embankment.

The Corps of Engineers has said the dam, located in Russell County, is in urgent need of repairs. The Corps says a failure could flood cities and towns in the valleys along the Cumberland River all the way to Nashville, Tennessee.
