Mine Safety Bill Gutted for New Safety Requirements

State Rep. Brent Yonts of Greenville, Ky., said the bill was gutted by a legislative committee and needs to be amended to provide needed protection for coal miners.

Yonts wants the requirement of Methane detectors, keeping a vehicle near work crews and engineered barriers to seal off abandoned mine tunnels to be restored. Two provisions that were kept in the bill would require two medics to be on duty at underground mines and would double the number of annual state inspections.
