Fire Dept. & Water Co. Feud Over Water Fees

By  |

A fight over water fees is pitting governmental agencies against one another.

The Bowling Green Fire Department and local business owners say a "standby fee" charged to businesses with sprinkler systems by the Warren County Water District is a safety hazard because it discourages other businesses from voluntarily installing their own sprinkler systems. They also say it is unfair because BGMU doesn't charge city businesses anything for the same service.

The water company says the fees are necessary so that only customers who utilize sprinkler systems pay for their water rather than all of the water district's customers, and say they are close to breaking even on the fee collection versus the cost of sprinkler systems.

Kentucky's Public Service Commission has been in the process of deciding the dispute since 2000, and a final decision is still months away.
