Tompkinsville Mayoral Re-Election Update

The re-election to decide who will be Tompkinsville’s mayor is on hold indefinitely. The controversy began last November when former Sheriff Beverly McClendon beat his opponent, Jerry Hodges, by one vote.

Hodges filed a lawsuit saying the number of votes cast in the mayor’s race was more than the number of registered voters living in Tompkinsville.

Hodges was also concerned about the number of absentee votes McClendon received.

After nine days of trial earlier this year, a judge ruled there was no wrong-doing and said a date would be set for a new mayoral election.

Late yesterday, Monday, March 5, 2007, McClendon appealed the judge’s decision to the Kentucky Supreme Court. He also filed paperwork restoring his position as mayor until a final ruling has been made.
