The Kentucky House of Representatives has passed legislation that would give coal miners more protection in their underground workplaces.
Representative Brent Yonts said the measure offers hope to Kentucky coal miners by increasing the presence of state inspectors at each operation. The number of inspections will increase from three to six-per-year.
The bill also provides for methane detectors that will allow miners to monitor for buildups of explosive gas.
The measure passed unanimously yesterday, Tuesday, March 6, 2007, but State Senator Robert Stivers said there may not be time to get the legislation through the Senate.
