Soldier Laid To Rest

A former Fort Knox soldier killed in Afghanistan will be buried this week in Kentucky.
Army Staff Sgt. Edward Bernard Smith, 30, died Sept. 24 when he was killed by a makeshift bomb in Afghanistan.
Visitation will be at Hager Funeral Home in Brandenburg, Ky., from 4 to 9 p.m. EDT Thursday and noon to 1:15 p.m. Friday.
The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Prichard Chapel at Fort Knox with burial in Zion Grove Cemetery in Ekron.
The Courier-Journal reported that Smith had already served a year in Iraq before reporting to Fort Knox in 2005 for the Army's Armor School. He transferred to Fort Lewis, Wash., in 2007 and deployed in July.
While at Fort Knox, Smith met and married his wife, Jamie Welch Smith. They had been married for 3 1/2 years at the time of his death.
