A divided House Committee has blocked a bill seeking to prevent state agencies from offering domestic partner health benefits.
The bill was in reaction to the University of Louisville’s decision last year to allow unmarried partners of school faculty and staff to obtain health coverage. Had it passed, the bill would let state institutions offer health insurance plans to only an employee’s spouse or children.
The measure failed in the Health and Welfare Committee on an 8-8 vote but the proposals supporters don’t declare it a defeat. They hope the issue will be revived in the final days of the 2007 General Assembly.
