Abell says since 9/11 the air and land units of the Kentucky National Guard have been invaluable in fighting the War on Terrorism, and he says they've done so in a very efficient manner.

Major Mike Abell says, "We've done better than any other state mobilizing soldiers. In fact, just sheer numbers, army and air, we've mobilized more than 4,500 of our 6,500 available and in doing that only had about nine soldiers fall out in the process."

Major Abell says the state is now getting grants to go toward better pay for those in the National Guard. He also says any state university can be paid in full for those qualified for the National Guard.

If Guardsmen serve 20 years they can also get retirement benefits.
