General Assembly Butt Heads

This year's general assembly will likely end without an agreement on how the state can mend its troubled pension system.

Lawmakers in the Democrat-controlled house want to wait on a plan that could limit pension benefits for future state employees. But in the Republican-led Senate lawmakers said a change is needed before the General Assembly adjourns this year.

Senate leaders are concerned failing to take action could lead to massive debt down the road. Time is running out if lawmakers want to start working on a deal this session. Legislators have just five working days before the session ends later this month.

House speaker Jody Richards said a task force should be created to look at the Senate's proposal so they can start working on it next year. Senate President David Williams said lawmakers can't wait that long.
