Kentucky Mining Accident

On the same day lawmakers pass legislation to protect Kentucky coal miners a miner is killed in a surface mine accident in Pike County.

Charles Griffith, 48, of Pikeville, Ky., was operating an excavator when it overturned as he was positioning it. The accident happened at the Double E Augering Incorporated Mine #2 at the Steele in the Feds Creek area of Pike County.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing was notified of the accident at 4:10 p.m. ET, March 12, 2007. In keeping with their procedure, the mine is closed until an investigation is complete.
