Bill Cracks Down on Illegal Handicap Parking

People that violate the law by parking in handicap spots, without a handicap sticker could soon be dishing out a lot more cash for their ticket.

Chris McPherson, of the Medical Center, says, "I think it's a great idea. The new fine. It'll keep people away from the spots they don't need to be in. These spots are reserved for people who actually need them."

The penalty now varies from $20 to $100. The new bill would set the fine at $250.

Bonny McDonald says, "I definitely do. I think it's entirely fair to charge $250. I don't know what it was before but that seems fair to me."

Residents that live in places like the Bowling Green Towers, say that even though signs like this one that warn violators that they'll be towed are still having a hard time finding a spot here, and now state legislators want to crack down on people who violate those laws and park in handicap spots.

McPherson says, "Parking signs are here at the Medical Center for a reason. In case of a real emergency someone with a handicap sticker may need to get in faster and look for a spot it could pose an immediate threat."

And for others, there's absolutely no justification in illegally parking in a handicap spot.

McDonald says, "No! I just don't see it. It seems like if you are disabled in any way or if you are older and can't walk or you have some type of physical problem then it makes sense to try and acquire a handicap sticker, but otherwise, it just seems like if you're in a hurry there isn't any justification for taking a spot that someone actually needs."

Legislators in Frankfort say while it seems like a stiff penalty for a parking violation, its easy to avoid. Don't park illegally in a handicap spot.
