Lisa Hussung, the music teacher at Richpond Elementary, works to help her students enjoy music while also helping them retain the knowledge.
"One of the biggest challenges for me as an elementary teacher is to make music fun while still teaching them the core content and the fundamentals and to give them a love for music," said Hussung.
She was recently awarded for all of her work as the KMEA Elementary Music Teacher of the Year.
"I was totally shocked, totally shocked [and] very honored, but totally shocked," said Hussung.
The kids at Richpond Elementary aren't the only ones celebrating their music teacher. The band director at Drakes Creek Middle, Sheila Smalling, also received the KMEA Middle School Music Teacher of the Year.
"It's very unusual, this doesn't happen," said Smalling.
The similarities between the two teachers don't end there. Both of the educators teach in the Warren County School District, they attend the same church, and Smalling even teaches band to the 6th graders at Richpond.
"We're very good friends, so we've just had a blast with this whole thing," said Smalling.
Smalling says she always wanted to be a teacher. When she discovered her love of music she combined the two to become a band director.
"I can't think of a thing I would rather do. It's just fun for me every day," said Smalling.
The two say they're honored to receive the awards and to be able to share it with a friend makes it more special.
