Every great team has a leader behind it. Jake Westerfield organized the Horse Ride For Cancer. He says, "We're starting our trail ride for cancer today. Going to Cheyenne, Wyoming."
Jake Westerfield is the man behind the mission. Westerfield, "We're doing it for cancer research because my wife passed away last February. And everyone is touched by cancer."
Everyone riding has lost someone they know to cancer. Jake has had some help along the way, especially from Jody Chinn. Jody knew Jake's wife and was excited to help plan the trip.
Jody Chinn says, "We sat down at a roundtable in his kitchen and 5 guys put a bunch of ideas. And here it is!"
Last summer Jake and another friend who lost his wife to the disease took at trip across the state to prepare for their horseback journey.
Chinn says, "They picked side roads most of the time along the way out there. When they get to Kansas they have a lot of free space."
Westerfield says, "We allowed ourselves four months and we'll get there the last week in July. For the Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo."
The group will be picking up other riders along the way and they have towns on their path waiting for their arrival.
Chinn says, "People are planning things for them to do. Like this weekend in Clay, Kentucky is having a big barbeque. So people are joining just for the day."
But Jake isn't doing the ride just for fun. Westerfield says, "I had a friend have his wife pass away last week and it just goes to prove everyone is touched by cancer."
