Kentucky would join other states in an effort to by-pass the electoral college under a plan pending in the Kentucky House. Under the measure, Kentucky would instead pick the president by popular vote.
Proponents say the plan would force candidates to pay more attention to smaller states such as Kentucky.
Supporters say they hope to have the rule in place by the 2008 presidential election. If the plan is accepted, Kentucky’s eight electoral votes would go toward the presidential candidate who won the most votes nationwide, but it’s unlikely the bill will win passage this year, seeing as there are only two days remaining before the legislature adjourns.
