Two Ft. Campbell servicemen are awarded the Soldier’s Medal for rescuing their comrades-in-arms during a fiery crash in Iraq. Master Sergeant Michael Manley and Staff Sergeant Heshimu Woods were honored Wednesday, March 21, 2007.
The Soldier’s Medal is given to G.I.s who perform a heroic act not involving enemy conflict.
Last August Manley and Woods were in a two-vehicle convoy when a large tanker rammed and flipped the lead vehicle. The gunner was killed instantly, but three other soldiers remained trapped. Manley and Woods battled the flames, flipped the vehicle upright and rescued the three soldiers. Two of the soldiers survived the incident.
