Since the National Spelling Bee was launched in Kentucky in the early 20's. The number of students competing has skyrocketed with more and more schools encouraging kids to learn their vocabulary.
Recently, middle school student Hope Chapman took second place at the state competition.
Chapman says a love for reading helped her study and prepare for the competition.
Sixty other students competed in the event in Louisville, which lasted more than three hours.
