Nearly 40 percent of KEES recipients have failed to qualify for the grant for a second year. More than 63,000 students receive money from Kentucky's largest state-financed college scholarship program called KEES, Kentucky Education Excellence Scholarship.
The program is based on high school grades. A new report shows 2004 graduates who spent their first year on a Kentucky campus had an average 2.8 GPA, which is about a C average.
The KEES grant amount varies depending on a student's performance each year. Some students can receive up to $2,500 a year for four years.
