A group of consultants has reported the state needs to invest at least $8.7 billion to upgrade university buildings and construct new ones across the Commonwealth.
The consultants are under contract with the Council on Post Secondary Education.
They toured and assessed more than 700 buildings finding that most are over 30-years-old and in poor condition.
One consultant said additional building will be needed if universities want to meet their enrollment goal of 75,000 additional students by 2020.
