Police advise against it and some lawmakers want to ban it.

Texting while driving has certainly become a hot topic across the country and in Kentucky.

A cell-phone helps us instantly connect with a quick call or a simple text.

But officials say doing it out on the road is just too risky.

And with the help of some high school students, we found out how dangerous it can be.

"I didn't think it would be much of a challenge, but it was," said Jalyn Savage, a junior at Bowling Green High School.

Jalyn Savage will try for her license in December, but she's got to pass Driver's Ed first.

"It was ok when you weren't texting, but when you were it was a lot tougher," she said.

Jalyn is part of a class participating in a demonstration where students try to text and drive through a number of road simulations.

"I started out good, and then when I went back through it a second time and I was texting and driving and definitely did really bad," she said.

Corey Pruitt's been driving for about a year and says he sends some 200 texts a day.

After his run, and crashing some cones, he says he's more apprehensive about texting while driving.

"When I started looking down at the phone and having to divert my attention, there was no way I could keep it right," he said.

"It is a very serious matter, and it is a very dangerous thing," said Mike Breen, a personal injury attorney in Bowling Green.

Breen says he routinely has cases where people driving and texting have caused serious wrecks.

"You can't drive a car, and drive it safely while you're talking on the phone or in particular, texting on the phone," Breen said.

Police agree and say trying to do so is like being behind the wheel drunk.

"You have more confidence in your driving ability, but you're very distracted by taking your eyes off the roadway," said Officer Barry Pruitt, with the Bowling Green Police Dept.

It's an eye-opening experience for such a young group and enough information for Jalyn to put her phone away when she's behind the wheel.

"Before, I didn't really see the big ordeal with texting and driving. But now I understand you should definitely pay attention to the roads more," she said.

Police say every student who took part in the demonstration did hit cones and were distracted in some way.

State Representative Jody Richards, who has pre-filed a bill for the Kentucky 2010 Legislative Session to ban texting while driving says that idea's time has come.
