A program that Kentucky has been using to combat meth labs in the state is going national.

Sergeant Stan Salyards with the Louisville Metro Police Dept. says the program logs the purchase of cold or allergy medicine that can be used to make methamphetamines and limits how much you can buy.

"They are smart enough to know that if they walk into a pharmacy, and take a box up there and say 'Where am I on my limit?'" says Sgt. Salyards.

"The pharmacist will tell them, 'Well you're at six grams,' so they will know exactly where they are and they can stay under that nine gram limit."

The new system is being made available nationally, so far Kentucky, Illinois and Louisiana are using it.

Police say it gives them a good idea of who may be using cold medicines to manufacture methamphetamines.
