Plus-Minus Grading System Over for Now

The highly debated issue of plus-minus grading on Western Kentucky University's campus appears to be over for now.

Provost Barbara Burch recently told the University Senate that she can't approve a new grading system because there are too many unanswered questions. For example, the system didn't add pluses to the "A" letter grades, and not all faculty and students support the change.

Burch said the item is off the table for now, but can be re-evaluated if research can answer some of her questions.

The plus-minus grading scale was first proposed four years ago by Economics Professor Brian Strow. The Senate voted to pass the measure 36 to 23 during its March meeting.
