Million dollar modifications may take place at Wolf Creek

There’s another potential problem for the leaky Wolf Creek Dam. Now a power plant operator wants to make $24 million in modifications to ensure electricity can be generated if the water level of Lake Cumberland drops any more.

The Army Corps of Engineers lowered the water level earlier this year to ease pressure on the leaky dam while repairs are made.

East Kentucky Power Cooperative wants to add barge-mounted water pumps and a cooling tower to the plant. The plant draws water from the lake for cooling.

Spokesman Kevin Osbourn said East Kentucky doesn’t anticipate any problems generating power if the lake stays at the current water level, which is 680 feet.
