Concerns over Obama's safety warrant secret service protection

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama has been placed under secret service protection.

The decision is based on general concerns about the Illinois democrat's safety and not a direct threat. Several factors have raised concerns including racist chatter on white supremacist web sites. It's the earliest a presidential candidate has ever been given a secret service detail.

However, Obama's rival for the Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, has secret service protection because she's a former first lady.
