Local pharmacist indicted for defrauding health care benefit programs

A Bowling Green, Ky., pharmacist faces charges of healthcare fraud.

U.S. Attorney David Huber announced that Verlon Lane Pierce was indicted.

The indictment states that from January 2001 to December 2004 Pierce defrauded health care benefit programs, including Medicaid. He allegedly billed those programs for prescription drug samples provided to patients.

Also according to the indictment, Pierce unlawfully purchased, sold and traded prescription drug samples.

Pierce could face 20 years in prison, $500,000 fine and supervised release for three years.

Pierce is scheduled to appear on May 23, 2007, before the U.S. Magistrate Judge in Bowling Green.
