Housing Authority of Bowling Green: Funding Concerns

The Housing Authority of Bowling Green's summer program was in jeopardy of shutting down due to a lack of funding. Now another area agency is helping out.

Kelton Withrow and his friends are gearing up for the Housing Authority of Bowling Green's summer program.

"It basically keeps kids out of trouble instead of doing bad things and it's a good way to spend your summer besides laying on the couch all of the time and eating all the time and watching football, and sports all the time," said Kelton Withrow, a program participant.

"You have fun. You go swimming almost every week and you just hang out with your friends and stuff," said Cody Kessinger, another program participant.

"We try at least once or twice during the summer to get kids out to see something that would be educational, historical," said Donna Workman, with the Housing Authority of Bowling Green.

This summer the program almost didn't happen. Workman said it was going to be cut due to a lack of funding.

The summer program has now been saved thanks to a few helping hands at the United Way of Southern Kentucky.

The organization is providing $38,000 so the Housing Authority won't have to shut it's doors to students for the summer.

"One of the things we wanted to make sure of is that children's skill sets stay the same or actually improve over the summer and that's exactly what this summer program does," said Doug Eberhart, the President of the United Way of Southern Kentucky.

Now Kelton and his friends will have a place to go during their vacation from school.

"Well, I would have been practicing for basketball or football, but some other people - we wouldn't have been able to exercise or go on field trips, we wouldn't have been able to have fun, so we'd just stay at home," Kelton said.

The summer program starts June 11, 2007. For more information you can log onto "http://www.habg.org/"
