A Grayson County Middle School student will be a spectator at the finals of 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee after getting knocked out in a preliminary round of the competition.

Fourteen-year-old Macy Purcell earned the trip to Washington D.C. after winning the Kentucky Derby Spelling Bee in March 2007.

The eighth grader from Leitchfield, Ky., said he only scored twelve out of 25 in a multiple choice test which led to his elimination.

Even though he's disappointed, Purcell said it was an honor to be at the competition with his family.

Purcell said a German word was so difficult he couldn't even pronounce it much less spell it. The word was bewussteinslage!
