Callers to parts of Western Kentucky will use a new area code by the end of next year. That’s because the 270 area code has essentially run out of numbers.
Kentucky’s Public Service Commission said on May 31, 2007, that the 270 calling area will be split and residents in the western portion will get a new code. The cities include Henderson, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Murray and Paducah.
A transition period, during which either the new code or 270 may be used, will begin by April 1, 2008.
Mandatory use of the new area code will take effect later that year on Oct. 1, 2008.
The new code hasn’t been assigned yet.
