The Bowling Green City Commission voted unanimously to turn the vacant area on the corner of College and 7th Street into a parking lot.
This was the area that was originally supposed to hold a parking structure that SKyPAC would be able to use, before it was moved near Western Kentucky University's campus.
"Its going to be great for us because we're guaranteed to have 150 parking spots for our performances," says SKyPAC Project Director, Mary E. Carpenter.
Its not the original plan for the corner of 7th and College, also known as "Block 6".
"We agreed to give that section of the triangle or "Block 7" up in exchange for parking in the parking structure. Since the parking structure moved close to Western's campus, the Chapter 58 has agreed to give us 150 surface parking spaces for 20 years," explains Carpenter.
In exchange, SKyPAC will relinquish ownership of the "triangle" back to the city for it to use in the "Tax Increment Financing" district.
The "triangle" would have been used for parking had the Commission not passed the change.
Carpenter says now the performing arts center won't lose any parking spaces with the new street lot a block over from it.
Even though the downtown redevelopment authority says its still seeking development to put on that property, their parking spaces won't be negatively effected, not even for another parking structure.
"If they come back and build another parking garage we will have 150 parking spaces in the new parking garage that they build."
Carpenter says the move comes at a great time.
Right now the building's foundation is being laid and building permits are being issued.
Next Tuesday, the SKyPAC board will begin taking opening bids for the remainder of the facility's construction.
