For many students going to school for the first time can be very scary. But some kindergarteners are getting a little bit of help that will hopefully ease those fears.
Students at Holy Trinity Lutheran are receiving a warm welcome this year because of the buddy program. Third grader Abby Smith serves as a big buddy. She waits by the student drop off and then escorts a preschooler or kindergartener to their classroom. Teachers say it helps students ease into the school setting which can be uncomfortable at first.
In years to come the little buddies eventually become big buddies which workers say forms higher self-esteem, stops bullying, and creates leaders. While kids say they make friends of all ages along the way. The big buddies are children in grades three through six. The students volunteer to come in early and be a buddy.
