A fiery crash on the interstate leaves one man dead and put traffic at a standstill for hours.
It happened just after four Tuesday morning in northern Hart County.
Kentucky State Police say 31-year-old Manjit Gill, of Ontario, Canada, was a semi-truck driver killed in the wreck.
The Hart County coroner says the man was heading back from a trip to Louisiana.
The crash involving three semi trucks happened on a stretch of interstate with only two northbound lanes. And that transportation officials say could have been a reason for the crash.
It was the aftermath near Munfordville Tuesday morning -- a tractor trailer sits on top of another after state police say a semi rear ended two others, both at a standstill following a previous accident.
"When you get into that two lane section you don't have as much wiggle room," said Kiersten Jaggers, with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Jaggers says a fair number of crashes have happened in that area.
"This is something we've discussed here at District 3 and District 4 and we just think it's a culmination of a lot of different variables," Jaggers said.
Jaggers says while wet roads may've been a factor in the morning crash, a switch from a three-lane interstate to only a two-lane could also be blamed.
"When you push it down to two lanes and you push it down to one lane, you're going to create backups and the possibility of a crash increases," Jaggers said.
Federal money is used to widen sections of interstate, but transportation officials say with budget concerns on both a state and federal level, widening at least this stretch of road could take a few years.
"We knew that it was going to be probably a little while before we could get that additional funding," Jaggers said. "That's why Governor Beshear made the big push for the cable barrier and that's why we're using the temporary concrete barriers to try and eliminate any head-on collisions."
"I'm good at asking and it does goes to ask. I mean, we did get the barriers and the cables," said Dottie Sims, state representative for the 19th District.
Representative Sims serves the Hart County area.
She says frequent crashes in her district are frustrating.
She says she's called on both Governor Beshear and transportation officials to look for a way to speed up expanding an aging stretch of interstate.
"With the economy the way it is, it's just taking longer to get it finished," she said.
A representative with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 4 in Elizabethtown says legislators will take a look at a "highway plan" put together by the cabinet in January.
Officials say part of that plan includes expanding the two-lane section of interstate where Tuesday's crash happened.
