A man charged in the fatal shooting of a popular community doctor in eastern Kentucky is expected to hear some of the evidence against him Tuesday morning.

John Combs faces a preliminary hearing in Perry District Court in Hazard in the murder of Dr. Dennis Sandlin. Combs has pleaded not guilty.

Combs lawyer Will Collins says he expects to go forward with the hearing rather than waive the case to the grand jury in order to get an understanding of what evidence the prosecution will rely on.

Police say the 46-year-old Combs shot Sandlin in the Perry County clinic hours after he was denied narcotics. Sandlin had worked there for almost two decades and was the clinic's only doctor.
