Portfolio Problems

The State Education Board is considering doing away with writing portfolios. Writing portfolios are papers students in fourth, seventh, and twelfth grades work on through the year. The papers are then graded at the end along with C.A.T.S. state tests.

The pieces are designed to show how much a student has learned throughout the year not just on a test day. Teachers say they spend too much on the projects though and tend to overlook the basics like grammar.

This summer, the Department of Education, will create a task force to look at different ways to improve the writing portfolios.

Tips for Parents According to Ky Department of Education: Don't direct, edit or correct your children's writing. Do ask questions and provide opportunities to help your children improve their writing and understand the five-step writing process.
