With the first day of 2010 comes reflections of the year 2009.

We met up with Mayor Elaine Walker to discuss what 2009 meant for Bowling Green.

"When I look back on 2009, Bowling Green had some tough times, but we pretty much held our own we had a couple of things that were pretty exciting," said Walker.

Much of that excitement can be found in downtown redevelopment, like the opening of the Hot Rods first season.

"It was a great first season," said Walker. "We were able to make the deadline in terms of construction of the stadium, and I think people came to understand the value of minor league ball."

Plus many major projects are now underway.

"We have started the construction of Greenwood Lane realignment in front of Greenwood High School, which is going to help ease the traffic coming out of Gander Mountain," said Walker.

They're also working on expanding Old Morgantown Road.

"We have completed the engineering, and we're starting property acquisition and right of way acquisition, so we should be moving forward with that and the reconstruction of that this year," said Walker.

Mayor Walker says we have seen stimulus money here, but she hopes to get more money coming into Bowling Green soon.

"We have seen money going to the Housing Authority," said Walker. "They're going to use it to refurbish foreclosed properties and get those back into homeownership. For Community Action, they've got weatherization funds which will really help this year, and also new transit monies."

Two-thousand-nine did bring a substantial reduction in revenue, so the city is working to grow existing businesses and bring new ones in.

Mayor Walker says she's looking forward to 2010, and while she believes the economy will turn around, the impact may be delayed meaning there may be a tighter budget this year.

"I believe that we're going to get through this, and I think we're going to come out stronger on the other end," said Walker.

Be sure to tune into WBKO at ten this Sunday when Mayor Walker will discuss what she feels 2010 has in store for Bowling Green.
