Blue Mold in Logan County

By Katie Weber |

Blue Mold has been confirmed in Logan County and now many other counties in our viewing area are on notice. The mold can come from already infected tobacco plants or it can be airborne. The mold can be seen by the trained eye, but to be confirmed Blue Mold; it must be taken to a lab for further inspection.

This yellowish fungus grows underneath the tobacco leaf in wet and windy conditions and can severely effect tobacco production. Chris Milam of the UK Cooperative Extension Service in Logan County says to prevent Blue Mold farmers should take precautions with a weekly spray.

As of Wednesday several counties in our viewing area have been put under watch including Warren, Simpson, Todd, Butler, Edmonson, Grayson, Hart, Hardin, and Ohio.
