It was another day of empty classrooms across Warren County.

For the fourth day, school was canceled for all county schools.

Officials say there's one spot in particular that's caused school doors to stay shut.

Until Tuesday afternoon, the streets of Smiths Grove remained untouched by road crews, with slick spots all over the city.

"We just can't go into an area that's slick like that," said John Odom, director of transportation for Warren County schools.

All across Smiths Grove Tuesday afternoon, street after street was still covered in snow and ice.

"We were out there yesterday looking at the roads and just assumed they were going to do something with them," Odom said.

Odom says streets near North Warren Elementary have kept his buses parked.

"We want to be in school. The superintendent wants to be in school because that's what we're here for. We're here to teach kids," Odom said.

Tuesday afternoon, relief finally came as county trucks salted and scraped side streets.

Jerry Young, county roads supervisor for Warren County, says since Smiths Grove is a city, county crews won't treat there until they're requested -- a request that didn't come until Tuesday morning.

We tried asking Smiths Grove Mayor Steve Watt about the request delay, but officials there told us he wasn't available.

A city clerk did say by phone that Smiths Grove has no access to road maintenance trucks and even though streets were covered with snow, she says officials weren't aware until Tuesday that buses couldn't drive on them.

Now, with all roads clearing up across the county, the school says it will already be playing catch-up on missed days.

"We'll make them up now," Odom said. "We've got four days to make up right now."

Odom says because roads were treated Tuesday afternoon, Warren County schools will be back in classes on Wednesday.
