Cigarette May Have Caused Charleston, S.C. Fire

As the South Carolina firefighters are being remembered, investigators are still trying to determine the cause of that deadly fire.

Nine-one-one tapes and transcripts released on June 21, 2007, indicate the fire broke out in an area between the showroom and warehouse, where employees took smoke breaks.

Investigators don’t know yet if a cigarette started it.

The area is described as a covered deck and had a trash bin for furniture, boxes and plastic wrapping.

One worker said employees had been specifically warned not to flick cigarettes into the trash, which they said was “grounds for dismissal.”
