Having a doctor you can trust and see eye-to-eye with can be very important to patients. This week’s Hometown Hero is a local doctor who has been making quite the impression on his patients and is going to be sincerely missed as he has recently announced his retirement.

Dr. Roger Goodwin has seen 49,000 over the past 34 years of service to the Bowling Green community. Paul Sharp is one of those patients and said he has enjoyed having Dr. Goodwin as his doctor.

“He’s spoiled me. I guess when you got somebody you like, you just know your really going to miss them,” Sharp said.

Dr. Goodwin is a urologist in Bowling Green and has made quite the impression on many in the community.

“Well, I’ve been blessed of course, by what I do but I also really enjoy people,” Goodwin said.

Dr. Goodwin said he really has enjoyed his patients and really considers them extended family.

“I feel especially blessed that honestly said with rare exception there’s never been a patient I would not enjoy having home for dinner on a Sunday night,” Goodwin said.

He said he has one regret in his career, that he wishes he could take back though.

“There’s been a few nights that I have gone home and said, ‘you know these people really don’t appreciate,’ and gosh that really was a mistake,” Goodwin said.

Dr. Goodwin said he really had no idea. People thought as much of him as they do and it has been amazing, the outpour of love he has gotten since he decided to retire .

“He’s done everything he needs to do to help people,” Sharp said.

Goodwin is one of the only doctors in Bowling Green that was on call 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week.

“I want to express my gratitude to the community of Bowling Green,” Goodwin said.

Dr. Goodwin and his wife will move back to Louisville to be near their three children.

If you would like to say goodbye to Dr. Goodwin you can do so in a farewell reception, July 19, 2007, from four to six in the classroom at Greenview Hospital.
