Drought May Affect Area Fourth of July Celebrations

The widespread drought could affect more than just crops - especially where Fourth of July celebrations are planned.

Danville Fire Chief Mike Thomas said he’s recommending this year’s $7,000 fireworks show should be postponed until later in the year, or even possibly canceled.

Thomas and other firefighters visited the fairgrounds and the adjacent Millennium Park last week and found the grass to be brown and dormant.

Thomas said the dry grass could easily kindle and spread.
