For many American’s, Independence Day is one of the most exciting times of the year, but for war veterans the sound of fireworks can bring back the fears of war.
Many veterans struggle with a form of post traumatic stress. Counselors said fireworks can aggravate tough memories.
Some veterans said they avoid firework shows because they can’t differentiate between the sound of a firecracker and the sound of a mortar.
Counselors at the vet center in Oregon said the best thing to do is be mindful of your neighbors, set off fireworks at a reasonable hour and in an open space.
