Debate Over Fletcher's Special Session

Governor Fletcher said he’s not playing politics by calling a special session this week, despite claims made by Democrats.

The one-term Republican governor is running for re-election against Democrat Steve Beshear.

Beshear said none of the issues included in Fletcher’s call on July 2, 2007, for the special session justify the $60,000-per-day cost to taxpayers.

In setting the special session agenda Fletcher has brought up the controversial question of whether public university employees should be eligible for domestic partner health insurance benefits.

He said the primary task waiting for lawmakers when they return to Frankfort on July 5, is to deal with an incentives package for energy companies looking to build high-tech alternative fuel plants involving coal.

The governor said the session is about jobs and opportunities, not politics.
