Germ Lab Not Coming to Kentucky

Kentucky didn't make the cut for a $450 million dollar national lab where killer germs like anthrax, avian flu and foot-and-mouth disease will be studied .

Congressmen say Texas and four other states are finalists for the facility. A plan had been submitted that would've placed the lab on 150 acres about ten miles north of Somerset in south-central Kentucky.

A group including the University of Louisville, the University of Kentucky and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee had pitched the proposal. Texas Research Park in northwest San Antonio is one of the possible hosts for the 520,000-acre National Bio- and Agro-Defense Lab.

The finalists were chosen by a team from the Homeland Security Department, the Agriculture Department and Health and Human Services.
