Parents Get a Crash Course in Sex Ed 101

Having that first talk with kids about where babies come from isn't always easy for moms and dads, especially when those kids are in elementary and middle school.

But in today's society, kids sometimes hear details at school and from friends before they hear it from their parents. That's why a consultant with the Kentucky Department for Public Health is traveling the state in an effort to teach parents how to talk about the birds and the bees.

Besty Neale, with the Department for Public Health, says it's important to have an ongoing dialogue about sex education, adding appropriate information depending on age and readiness of the child. Studies actually show that kids prefer to be taught about sex by their parents and that parents have the strongest influence on the decisions their children make about sex.
