A Senate committee began debating the president's nominee for surgeon general, July 12, 2007 .
Dr. James Holsinger of Lexington, Ky. was introduced by Senator Mitch McConnell. McConnell called Holsinger's career inspiring and impressive. Holsinger is expected to face some tough questions as the last surgeon general said his office was manipulated for political reasons.
Holsinger said he'd resign before letting politics put aside science.
Holsinger also tried to answer criticism of his past writings, particularly those on homosexuality.
