Western Kentucky University receives more than $17-million dollars in donations, a 21-percent increase from last year's donations .
WKU's fundraising program is recognized as one of the nation's best. Western's president, Gary Ransdell, said everyone realizes what the university means for the community and the state.
He said most of the money was given as a designated gift, which means it's meant for specific needs.
"Academic scholarships to recruit the best and the brightest students, faculty support to retain the best and brightest faculty, physical improvement of the campus, and academic and athletic support," Ransdell explained.
Ransdell said the gifts came from about 20,000 different donors.
