Western athletics is ready for a major announcement.
"It's groundbreaking when it comes to philanthropic support," said Dr. Wood Selig, Western Kentucky University Athletic Director.
On July 18, 2007, the university will announce a major gift to the program.
"Any time private individuals or corporations step up and make a large gift possible, that helps create a huge campaign that WKU couldn't afford otherwise," Selig admitted.
Dr. Selig said the announcement wouldn't have been possible without the Board of Regents vote to expand the football program from Division 1-AA to 1-A.
"This is a direct result from the vote to go 1-A," Selig assured.
Gifts to the university also make the games more affordable for you.
"If we didn't have that support, ticket prices and concessions would be higher, so these types of individuals and corporations help keep other costs reasonable," Selig explained.
The athletics dept. is hoping this announcement will have a snowball effect and others will take the ball and run, by donating to the school.
The announcement will be July 19 at 9 a.m., in Centennial Park on Western's campus. We'll have more on exactly what the gift is tomorrow on WBKO at 5 and 6 p.m.
