Proposed Library Tax For Warren County

A proposed library tax could save the Smiths Grove Branch.

At Warren Fiscal Court on July 20, 2007, the magistrates discussed implementing a library tax.

In order to do that the city of Bowling Green would have to dissolve its library and board.

If the second reading passes, the county public library couldn't be established until July of 2008.

The tax bills would go out in October and November of 2008.

Alisa Carmichael, with the Bowling Green Public Library, says the tax would cost taxpayers 4.3 cents per $100 in property value.

That's less than the five cents city residents currently pay.

"It's a win-win for everybody. It's a win for the city and the county," said Carmichael.

If the tax is established it will provide the library with a steady stream of revenue and save the Smiths Grove Branch from closing its doors.

The first reading passed three to two.

Magistrates Richard Morgan and Robert Donoho both voted "no".

Terry Young was not at the meeting.

The second reading is July 27th, 2007 at 10:00 in the morning.
