Health Insurance Proposals

Lawmakers in the house are offering two dramatically different proposals on health insurance for the working poor.

The proposals are a result of talks between House Republicans and Democrats about renewing the state children’s health insurance program.

Republicans have proposed increasing spending on the program by up to $1.5 billion over five years and focusing the program on children and pregnant women living in low-income homes.

Democrats have also proposed increasing spending over five years, but by $50 billion.

A Senate proposal to extend the program drew the support of both parties, but disagreements in the House will make it harder to pass a long-term renewal of the program before it expires in September 2007.
