The woman who gave birth to a baby in a prison restroom is arraigned on charges of killing her newborn.

20 year old Ashley Cox of Corbin is charged with murder and concealing the birth of an infant.

During Cox's court appearance Oldham County Judge Diane Wheeler entered a "not guilty plea" on her behalf and appointed her a public defender.

After Cox's arraignment her family read a statement to the media.

"We were unaware of this pregnancy. And we strongly believe Ashley was unaware of it, too. We are not only in shock, but grieving this unexpected loss."

The Kentucky State Police say Cox gave birth in the visitor's bathroom at a correctional complex in La Grange Sunday. The baby was found in a trash can.

An autopsy showed the full-term baby was alive and healthy when she was born.

Cox is due back in court March 17th. Her bond is set at two and a half million dollars.
