The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced major enhancement projects along area highways today.

They include improving sidewalks and landscaping in Allen, Barren, Hart, Simpson and Warren Counties.

The "Safe Routes to School" program gives students sidewalks around their schools for safer walking and biking.

"I have three children in the system and I go to three different schools in the morning delivering my kids and almost every school has a number of children having to walk in the street to get there," said Lucas, from the Barren River Resort Park.

"It's important that we get the funding back out into the communities to make a difference in peoples' lives. It's where we live, work and raise our families," added Jim Henderson, Simpson Co. Judge-Executive.

Simpson County is also painting a mural on the concrete wall that went up after the expansion of 31-W, which will serve as a gateway into the Franklin community.
